Common Myths About Diabetes

Common myths about diabetesNovember is Diabetes Awareness Month. According to Diabetes Canada, one in three Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes, and 1.5 million with undiagnosed diabetes. Diabetes is becoming more prevalent, and people are becoming more aware of the disease. However, there are still many misconceptions and myths about diabetes which can create a stigma surrounding the disease. Here are a couple common myths we hear about diabetes and the reality behind them.

Myth: Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar

Reality: Short answer, no. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors. Type 2 is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight and having a diet high in calories from any source (including sugar) does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. However, it is not the only contributing factor.

Myth: People with Diabetes are more likely to get colds and other illnesses

Reality: Those with diabetes are not more susceptible to colds or other illnesses. However, any kind of illness can make blood sugars more difficult to control. It is recommended diabetics get their annual flu vaccination to help protect themselves. Those with diabetes who do contract the flu are more likely than non-diabetics to develop serious complications.

Myth: Having Diabetes means you’re doomed

Reality: Of course not! Diabetes is a disease and therefore should be treated very seriously. That being said, managing your diet and medication, getting some exercise and having a positive outlook will contribute to a long and happy life. Diabetes can be controlled if you are committed to staying healthy.
