Well if you can believe it, it is that time of year again. You’ve probably heard all of the cold and flu commercials on Radio and TV reminding you to get your annual flu shot. Flu shots are available starting on Monday, October 15, 2018. You can now book your appointment by calling the pharmacy. We will be accommodating walk-ins as much as possible, but if you want to have a designated time, please book your appointment.
We know you’ve heard year after year the reasons why you should get a flu shot. And we are sure you are aware of the differences between the common cold and the flu. One topic that often gets missed this time of year, are the other vaccinations you should be thinking about when you come in for your flu shot.
Our Pharmacists are able to assess, prescribe and administer immunizations for our patients. This makes it easier than ever to make sure you are up to date on all your immunizations.
Immunization is not just for children but a lifelong process. Depending on your age, there are different vaccines that you may want to consider now, or in the future.
HPV Vaccine: for adults age (up to 43) protects against the 9 most common strains of Human Papilloma Virus that causes cancer.
dTap: this combined vaccination of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis should be given at 18 years of age or older. It is especially important for pregnant women to have this immunization.
TD: a booster dose of tetanus-diphtheria is recommended every 10 years
Hepatitis B: for adults born before 1981 or later you have most likely had this vaccine while in school. For those born before 1981, it is recommended you receive this vaccine.
Shingrix: the shingles vaccine is recommended for all adults 50 years of age or older even if you have had the Zostavax vaccine.
Prevnar 13: pneumococcal vaccine, if you are 50 years of age or older you are at a higher risk pneumonia
Pneumovax 23: used in combination with Prevnar 13, recommended for 65+
Also, if you have travel plans in your future, make sure to speak with your pharmacist about travel-related vaccines as well. While you are getting your flu shot this year, ask your pharmacist about vaccines that may be applicable to you. For all your immunization questions and answers, make sure you check out the Immunize Alberta website or speak with your Personal Pharmacist.
